Wow! What a weekend it has been.
I had one of those days. Or really, both days this past weekend.
Saturday morning I woke up early and went garage and flea market hunting with my father in law. We got back home around 1 pm.
Just before the event that only happens a few times in most people’s lives – birthing your child.
At 2:30 pm my wife’s water broke. She was due on March 9th, so it wasn’t totally unexpected. It was 10 days later after all.
The thing was, she wasn’t having any contractions. The nurse/midwife said that she could wait at home for a few hours since no contractions were happening.
Thinking that this might be a long night, I took a few hour nap. I tried to get the wife to as well, she didn’t.
Leaving our daughter with the grandparents, we headed over to the hospital around 6 pm.
Well, my thinking was right – it was a long night.
The contractions didn’t really start until 3 am.
I’m not in the medical field, but from what I’ve read our first child’s birth was just about textbook. My wife is a trooper, she received no drugs when she gave birth to our first. Not this one, no way.
By 9:30 am my wife was exhausted and in tremendous pain. She asked for an epidural. I don’t blame her.
A few more hours and we welcomed our second child into the world at 12:35 pm! A boy!
This was a surprise as we didn’t know what the baby was going to be. I know most people just have to know, but not us. The stoic in me doesn’t need to know. We have neutral sex baby clothing. The sex of the baby is something I cannot change, so it is out of my control. I don’t worry about it (something I learned from the ancient philosopher Epictetus), and we exercise our willpower by refusing to be told.
And a big boy at that. 9Lbs 3 ozs and 22 inches long. They told us that placed him in the 93rd percentile in size.
He barely fit into the newborn clothes we brought for him.
Here he is! Little baby Oliver. His top two favorite things are eating and sleeping.
The wife and I doubled something else – the number of our children!
We finally got to sleep around 8 pm Sunday night.
Thankfully, work allowed me to come in 2 hours later. I was exhausted. My wife was probably even more tired than I was.
Mother and child were released from the hospital today. Big sis wasted no time in playing with her new brother, even if he was pretty tired.
So many things are happening in my life, my time is getting stretched this way and that. All I know is that every day I head towards a more secure financial future for my growing family. Frugality and side hustles are a huge part of the journey. It is due to these things that I do not have to worry about money. Our bills will be paid, we will have food in our bellies, and a roof over our heads.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! He is adorable and I love his name. Doubling your number of kids is even better than doubling your dollars. Be sure to take the time to soak it all up. As I’m sure you know from your first, the newborn stage goes quick. Congrats, again. All the best.

Thanks Cody. He seems to have taken his looks from me, but only time will tell for sure. Quite different as our daughter looks very much like her mother. I will cherish all the moments. 🙂

Sleep? I wish! 😀
Big sister is so worried about her little brother. When she wakes during the night she always asks about him and doesn’t want to go back to sleep. That meant the wife and I woke up at 3am last night and didn’t get to go back to sleep.
I am hoping this is just a phase with her brother being the new thing. In time I hope things get back to normalish.
